Overview of Development
The library of the Bachelor Program in Japanese Language and Culture was established alongside the opening of the program. When the program began in September 1989, two instructors from Japan sent by the Japan Foundation brought a collection of donated books, including Japanese language textbooks. These donated books from Japan, along with books purchased in Indonesia, totaling approximately 150 copies, constituted the first collection of the library.
The collection is divided into two parts: the lecturers’ collection and students’ collection. The lecturers’ collection is labeled with the code キ (meaning 教師 (きょうし), which means “teacher”) and is placed in the lecturers’ room (D 108) so that the borrowing process can be controlled by the lecturers. Meanwhile, the students’ collection is labeled with the code ガ (学生 (がくせい), meaning “student”) and is fully entrusted to the students. This arrangement was intended to reduce the lecturers’ workload at the time.
The book collection grows every year. Most of the Japanese language books are donations. So far, the Japan Foundation has been the primary source for acquiring new Japanese publications. In addition to receiving annual book donations from the Japan Foundation, the library occasionally receives donations from individuals and institutions. Japanese students studying at UGM and instructors from the Japan Foundation often leave some of their books for the library. Hiroshima University of Economics, Kyorin University, the Vision, the Daido Life Foundation, Kokushikan University, the Japan Club in Yogyakarta, and many other institutions have also donated books to the library. Most of the encyclopedias and art books placed on the lower shelves on the west side of the library room are grants from the Japanese government in 1990. Originally, this grant was intended for the central UGM library but was later transferred to the library upon the request of the Japanese Literature Program (present-day Bachelor Program in Japanese Language and Culture) in 1993.
In early 1993, along with the relocation of the study program’s room, the library also moved to its current location, in the north wing of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences building. Initially, the student library was located in the study program’s room, then moved to the Himaje (students’ association) room, and in 1997 rejoined the lecturers’ library at the students’ request. Unfortunately, the student collection handed over to the lecturers was no longer complete.
Since 1998, a special book collection for lecturers was created. These books were labeled with the code ド (abbreviation of dosen “lecturer”) and placed in a cabinet on the south side of the lecturers’ room, consisting mainly of Japanese language textbooks and Japanese linguistics books. These books are only available for lecturers to borrow, although most are also available in the general library collection.
Currently, the library holds a collection of 7,005 volumes. Approximately 95% of these are Japanese language books, including Japanese language textbooks, Japanese linguistics, Japanese literature, Japanese history, and more. The remaining volumes are in Indonesian, English, and other languages using Roman script, covering topics such as Japanese history, Japanese literature, general linguistics, and others.
